Server down. Indefinitely? Empty Server down. Indefinitely?

Post by Mailleweaver Mon Feb 27, 2012 1:32 am

Hmmm. Interesting. It's been quite a long time. Even Stiffler's Kerplunc (the hosting site) account seems to be closed. I don't know if he's going to get this server back up.
I may set up a server myself, but it'd be a few days. I'd have to decide on a host, pick which plugins to use, and then find the time to set it all up. Luckily my school is ending a semester right now, so I'll have a few days downtime from that after finals are through. All I'll have to work around is my full-time job.
So, if I do set up my own server, would you guys want a new map or one from a backup of this one made on Feb 10? (I kind of lean toward a new map, myself.)
If you want a new map, I can probably upload the Feb 10 map somewhere for you guys to download if you want. That way you can wander around freely and see what everyone built. It's rather large, though (644MB).
I'm not even sure that I'd be a good owner, myself. I've been drifting away from this server lately. pale
Let me know what you guys think about all this.

Edit:
Here are links to the world files. Hopefully they work for you. There are a few Easter Eggs in the world, too. I'll list a few for you. Very Happy
  • Underdark: -991,-837 (Completely artificial -- the work of a Dragon.)
  • Volcano: 7433, -4911 (Found spawned naturally by me, but "enhanced" a bit by Syhd.)
  • Admin bottom-of-the-world Graffiti: 8010, -4902 (You can't see this one without flying below bedrock. I found a hole in the bedrock, and Syhd and I decided to decorate it a bit. Cool Wahya_Spirit joined in the fun a few days later. The easiest way to get to it is to fly down through the volcano and then go due east.)
  • There's also a huge underground room east of Syhd and Alkaro's trees, but it's completely empty.
And don't forget to check out everyone's trees! There are some really good ones out there.

I vote a new map when 1.2 comes out(hopefully in the next 2 weeks) with the new 256 block height limit, new terrain generator, jungle biomes and upgraded mob AI.

I'd like a new map too, with the new update. Natural jungle biomes will look way better than inserted ones. Plus new village features etc. I'm tempted to start a town tree.^^

Definitely 1.2.

Also: I was experimenting in a creative world the other day with the new map height. You can make absolutely HUGE trees. It's awesome. Very Happy

Woot! School final is done. Got an A on it!
But a B for the overall course...poo. Just one point from an A. If only I hadn't completely forgotten to take one of the quizzes.
Oh, well; it's enough to keep my scholarship.
Tomorrow night, I'll get started looking at plugins and/or hosting sites for the server.

Will you put the IP for the new server on this page or just change the one at the portal?

Both, probably. I might even have to make a new forum since I can't see any of this one's billing data. I can make donations directly to this site to keep it going, but I don't know how much, and it would suck to be paying too much for it (or not enough and have it suddenly shut down like the server).

Congrat on your A on the test.
Hope to see the the server up when 1.2 comes out, or maybe a snapshot server? before?
Good news for bukkit lovers, the 4 main developers of bukkit have joined Mojang, so coming 1.3 or 1.4 bukkit will be part of the vanilla minecraft server. Smile www.Mojang.com

I doubt I'll mess with a snapshot server. I haven't done anything with snapshots even for the client, and I think it'll be enough work just keeping up with the regular updates.

I'm also kind of glad that it will be a few days before 1.2 comes out, else I might have jumped into this without thinking it through enough. In going through server hosting sites and forum topics, I'm getting a lot of ideas and want to set up something that has the flexibility to handle them but still not feel too restricted or lacking if they don't get implemented. I think that's part of what killed the old server. Grand ideas with too much complication to support them that never got used.

I want to start with the basics, but have the behind-the-scenes infrastructure to be able to handle new stuff without limiting existing maps/gameplay or require the loss of existing maps to implement the new stuff.

I'll also keep mum about my specific ideas until I know I'm really going to act on them. That way you guys don't get strung out waiting for things that might not happen (and I don't constantly get asked things like, "what's corruption?"). <...Wonder how many punctuation marks I can string together without it looking like a curse word. 8 maybe? And wow, there are a lot of "I"s up there. </randomthoughts>

That is sweetness. No more waiting for a Bukkit RB after each update. cheers

Hello!
We plan to release Minecraft 1.2 tomorrow, but you can already check it out by downloading and installing it like a weekly snapshot!

You are going to have to nerf the large jungle trees, though. Just so it's fair for all of the other tree types. xD

I'm afraid I don't know of any way to control the frequency of biomes, so we'll just get what we get. I will pick a place for the spawn/community center that's not dead center of a huge snow biome, though.

And what do you guys think of the mcMMO plugin? I've been playtesting a server on the hosting site that I think I want to use, and it happens to have this plugin on it. I quite like it.

I vote for mcMMO all of the way. It's an amazing plugin and I would love to have it on this server.

P.S- On the new server, can I change my tree from birch to the jungle tree? I have come up with an idea I like very much, but it only looks nice in the jungle biome.

I'd vote for that plugin too. Also i wanted to ask if there is any chance we might get a mod/other tool to enable flight when you start in the new world?

Just so that you can pick yourself a good spot, which is obviously easier while flying. After you've picked a spot the option to fly should be disabled.

Also, if i remember correctly, there is a tree challange mod out there, which actually really ties you to your tree, causing damage if you leave it for long etc. I don't know if it is usable for SMP though. Might be worth a shot. It adds an extra wood form called heart wood or something like that, which acts as your "roads". If you leave the heart wood for more than 2 blocks or so, you'll slowly take damage. When your tree is created, it also creates a heart log. If that heart log is destroyed by any means your whole tree will blow up, you with it.

I'd recommond Mcmmo and the flying before your tree is choosen. However, maybe add a admin shop that allows you to use buy some needed items (bones, blaze rods, ghast tears, seeds, etc.). You could set up a mini economy then, say getting 10 of whatever money per 5 minutes.

Personally, I don't like mcMMO. I like RPG's, but it just doesn't fit in minecraft. The plugin is very grind-based, which isn't fun at all. It also makes the challenge rather easy with the skills and such.

Anyways, we have plenty of progression already with enchantments and stuff.

It's not like I care for it too much... But I would like it if you didn't add the plugin.

So, i tested quickly mcMMo on a serv,
read the Wiki, and i love it.

It would be awesome to have it, because it gives a feeling of progression on the player self, not on what he interact with.

All right, progress report time...
I've rented a server and gotten some very basic functionality from it (after learning a bit of Linux to disable the built-in minecraft installation so I could run a dev build of Bukkit). I've picked the world seed; actually, the first one I tried turned out pretty good. I've also picked the core plugins and started loading and configuring them. What a task!
I think I will go ahead and install mcMMO, but disable parts of it so we still have some "challenge" left. I'll give details of what I've disabled when I get it all done, so you guys won't be frustrated trying to use disabled features.
No estimated time-to-launch, yet. I've never set up a server on this scale, before, so I don't really have any idea how long it will take.
I'll continue to use this forum for a while as I get the server setup and established. I've made a donation to it to make sure it keeps going for another month or two. I'll just make a separate section for the new server so things don't get all mixed up. Eventually, after the server is fully setup and functioning, I will set up my own forum so as not to take over Ano's (and for the cost reason listed in the OP.)
On a side note, I didn't like the "flying at first logon" idea at first, but after thinking about it for a bit I came to realize it actually is a good idea. I have some thoughts on how to make it happen and will try to get it functional before launch if it's not too complicated.
