Reawakening

Post by Syhd on Sat Jan 28, 2012 4:34 am

How long had it been that I'd been asleep? I can't recall--perhaps days, perhaps decades. Long enough, in any case. Long enough for the swamp, where I pushed my first sapling from the ground, to dry up. Long enough for the trees who had shared the land two all but disappear. Long enough for a seemingly endless winter to take its claim on the area.

I remember that, fleetingly, there had been a small village built up around my roots. They had been drawn to the shade of my branches, and the sap-sweetened waters that I had already been pulling to the surface for ages. They had even constructed a wall, and a shrine around my trunk, and I had gone amongst them in a form that suited them. Generations of them had slipped by in the blink of my eye, and soon enough they learned of a land, far away, that was rich with gold--far more than my roots had shown them.

...That was when they cut me down. They used my timber for a boat and left, every last one of them, while I was reduced to a stump, surrounded in their stones and brickwork. All of my strength, then, had to be focused into sealing over the wound they had left, and I had fallen into this long sleep.

Maybe I would not have ever woken, had not a small pack of wolves taken shelter in the shrine during a particularly harsh blizzard. They dug their den amongst my roots and came snuffling to the well that was the heart of me, thirsty for its waters. That was what woke me: these animals warming themselves and sleeping against my bark. The first creatures that had wandered through to the center of my grove in ... how long?

They were easier to communicate with than the villagers from so long ago, not having separated themselves from the nature, the wilds, that they had come from. Their company was certainly better. We quickly became comfortable with each others' presence. I, and my ruins, provided them shelter... while they, in turn, provided protection.

Their numbers have gone by even quicker than the villagers', though unlike them these wolves have found no reason to travel on. Why should they? Their prey, too, is drawn to the shelter provided by the outer walls. They haven't known hunger or thirst since the first litter of pups was born here. The bones of their meals and the energy of the wolves themselves has been feeding into my roots, and I feel my own strength returning. I can almost put out new roots again... branches, maybe.

I am awake.

Hmm. I haven't been on the forums in a few days. Looks like I missed some good stuff.

I got to see the pencil sketch Very Happy which got me inspired enough to do my first drawing in years. I did my avatar, too, but it's not nearly as good (or imaginative) as Syhd's. It's also the first drawing I've done completely from imagination since junior high or something. I prefer to work from a picture or model of some kind; it's a lot easier.
